Hi all,

An Overview of GM :-

In brief, genetically modified foods & crops ( or GE or GM or GMO ) is a multilayered situation. It affects agriculture, science, labelling of foods, trade & crop yields, legal liabilities ( contamination of non GM crops ) as well as human, animal and environmental concerns. They've been commercially available since 1996. Biotech companies claim GM technology increases crop yields, uses less chemicals, feeds world hunger & protects crops from some insects.

The pro GM lobby will tell you concerns are perhaps 'irrational', but look for yourself. Don't take anything at face value. I'm sure you'll start to form a perception, as I did when I started looking a few years ago, when I had no idea whatsoever either way.

Briefly :

1. There are currently four main crops - soy, corn, cotton, canola - plus potato, papaya, carnations....( but many more are being tested and are planned )

2. These crops can be found in almost every processed food on the supermarket shelf - breads, cookies, oils, cakes, corn chips, soy products, cheeses, soy additives, corn derivatives added ( corn syrup etc ), chocolates, pet foods, etc etc...and you've probably been eating them for a few years now in this way, unless you've been eating organics.

3. There are highly contested concerns over the effects of GM foods & crops on agriculture, the environment, human & animal health, legal rights of consumers & farmers.

4. Primarily, a GM crop is either made resisitant to a particular chemical herbicide ( eg Roundup Ready corn or maize ) by inserting alien DNA into the plant, so that it can be sprayed by farmers and not be killed by the herbicide. The other common GM manipulation is to insert a pesticide into the DNA of a plant to make it produce it's own insect toxin for a particular insect ( eg Bt cotton )

5. There are already MANY instances of GM contamination of non GM crops - and organic crops ( GM contamination destroys organic status of a crop ). Contamination is rife all over the world.

6. Every plant, or GM contaminated plant, is 'owned' by the corporation that owns the patent for the GM dna patent. Farmers are under strict contracts.

7. The next generation of commercial GM crops is pharmaceutically based. Crops being genetically modified to produce plastics, vaccines, industrial chemicals, vitamins, and more...contamination still occurs with these too, by the way.

8. Foods containing or derived from animals fed GM feed is not labelled satisfactorily. Nor is it being sufficiently policed.

9. GM permanently entrenches industrialised, chemical & fossil fuel derived agricultural practices.

10. There have been NO - I repeat NO - human health feeding studies done for GM. None. Yet they still got approved.

So, please inform and educate yourself about what's happening and being planned for your food supply, for what you are putting in your mouth, as well as your kids' and animals' mouths. It affects everything and everyone, every animal and every aspect of nature.

I believe there are better alternatives to the GM industrial agricultural approach. Those alternatives will also be presented here soon.

One of the things that Wombat Wadio.org supports is the development of local food growing & supply ( urban vege gardens, farmers' markets etc ), and biodiversity in agriculture.

1. There are currently 4 bumper stickers available NOW & seen here on this page, top right.

2. They are high quality, waterproof, UV resistant and 25cm(W) x 7.5cm(H) in size.

3. It costs the same to post one sticker as it does to post thirty ( as long as width stays within Aust Post standard mail sizings ). Keep that in mind if you want to get more than one. The stickers are packed in Aust Post hard cardboard packaging.

4. The advertised website on the stickers is almost ready to go. Apart from being a solid resource and info link for all things GM and alternatives, it makes access to all the main australian ( and international ) NoGMO sites and people very easy and efficient.
